From the ship, we could see a massive rookery of Gentoo penguins dotting the coast and making their way up the hillside. Arriving at the first point of Cierva Cove, we reached the continent’s peninsula. According to our debriefing, the area is known for a variety of birds and marine mammals. Once at sea level, we had just enough time for a short trek along the black sandy beach to see three seals that were calling part of this cove their temporary sleeping quarters. Our approximately 90 minutes ashore consisted of a short hike along a ridge line, offering Instagram-worthy shots of the ship.

My roommate ended up with staticky hair after just a couple of nights. Although the cruise was billed as an 11-day adventure, I spent just 9 nights aboard Ocean Endeavour. This is because my first night was spent in a hotel (thanks to all those pre-departure briefings) and on my last day I was off the boat by 9 in the morning. I’d spent a few years eyeing various travel offerings from a group dedicated to solo female travelers, cunningly named The Solo Female Traveler Network (SoFe). The network promises to group like-minded women together on adventures. So when I saw that the program was offering 25% discounts on bookings to Antarctica, I jumped on it.

Among its many commitments, it only carries up to 199 passengers per trip. This is thanks to the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, which limits the activity allowed in Antarctica. A limited number of passengers per day are allowed to visit a specific site. So while you’ll see big cruise ships heading down to Antarctica, most of them simply sail on by. Both of these vessels sail with a maximum of 500 passengers when operating in Antarctica, which is on the high side for an Antarctic-based vessel. If you're eager to make a lot of landings in Antarctica during a trip to the continent, Hurtigruten's newest ships may not be the best choice.
Riding around Antarctica in the Zodiacs made every disappointment worth it
7 Alaska Small Ship Cruises By M.T. Schwartzman I took my first cruise to Alaska in 1988 aboard the old Noordam — an ocean-liner-type ship with over 1,200 passengers aboard, which was considered big back in those days. In line with IAATO protocol, ships carrying more than 500 passengers cannot disembark their guests. Sightseeing is done from the ship, and passengers still cross the Drake Passage, which means four days travelling there and back. King George Island, which is the largest of the South Shetland islands and located 75 nautical miles off the coast of Antarctica, has a runway that can facilitate medevac emergencies, but flights are weather-dependent.

Seabourn: Expedition Cruises Bring Well-Known Luxury to Antarctic Expeditions
Princess has scenic cruising down to a science and is capable of both entertaining and educating its guests along the way. For those who wish to contribute to our understanding of this remote region, some companies collaborate with research institutions to allow passengers to participate in data collection and other scientific activities. You must be an experienced climber, and be able to prove it, before a company will accept your booking for these challenging adventures. It’s included in most trips, weather permitting, and you’ll get to come home with some cool photos to prove you did it. You’ll usually have one full day in Punta Arenas, Chile, then schedule to fly to King George Island the next day.
Overall, we felt our stateroom was a comfortable and manageable space for this bucket list adventure. While coming from self-confessed over-packers, we did feel the cabin lacked storage. It featured two small clothes bars, two drawers, and some small shelves which didn’t really fit packing cubes well. It would have been nice to have additional drawers for storage of accessories and a separate area to dry wet gear. Thankfully, we always pack magnetic hooks; so, we ended up drying our clothing on these hooks after our expeditions. According to the cruise line’s website, the cabin measures 270 square feet.
The length of your voyage determines not only how much of Antarctica you get to explore but also how much time you spend on the open sea versus the continent itself. The length of Antarctica cruises vary quite a bit, with options ranging from a week right up to an entire month. A smaller ship often means a shallower draft too, so they can get into some areas that may not be deep enough for larger vessels. Besides that, there’s other considerations when it comes to ship size and choosing the best Antarctica expedition. If price is a major factor for you they are a good option and they do have a great product, but the size of their ships is something to consider.
Intrepid Ocean Endeavour Review
I am happiest near water, over water or better still on a conveyance moving through water. When my brother Sandy and I were deemed old enough, mother took us to Europe by ship. We flew on DAP from Santiago to Puerto Williams, the port Silversea uses exclusively for its Antarctica turn-arounds, instead of the more crowded Ushuaia in southern Argentina. In any case, travelers who make any journey to Antarctica are going to produce sizable carbon emissions on the long flights between their home airports and the southern tip of South America.

Quark also offers options for those fearful of the roundtrip two-day Drake Passage crossing, which may involve turbulent seas with a “fly the Drake” cruise. This line notably features late winter (Antarctica's late summer) sails -- a chance to see the region in a different season, with nesting penguins and returning whales. The biggest thing to know about Antarctica expeditions is to be flexible. The weather can change very quickly, creating unsafe conditions for landings and cruises.
While we are not prone to motion sickness, even we were unsure what to expect. Almost a rite of passage for an Antarctica cruise, the Drake Passage is notorious for having some of the roughest seas in the world. This body of water, located between South America’s Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands, meets no resistance from any land masses. During our cruise, we successfully made 5 of the 8 stops, 3 landings and 2 zodiac rides.

Escape into a white, icy realm first travelled by legendary explorers by embarking on an Antarctic adventure to the most peaceful place on earth. Holland America Line has a great deal of expertise cruising to Alaska. The line attracts a slightly older mainstream passenger than Celebrity, and the extended cruise length rules out almost all families.
Each day in Antarctic waters, weather permitting, all passengers can take part in a landing and a cruise. A landing typically includes a hike, wildlife viewing, and other activities. Passengers are transported from the ship to land on a small zodiac boat. A cruise is a zodiac boat ride in the harbor or channel around the ship to look for wildlife, icebergs and other sites.
It features some of the best dishes I have had at sea, like the roasted rack of lamb, black angus Chateaubriand, and the Hunan shrimp. Emily had asked the previous day if any coconut gelato was available, and Celeste had gone down into the galley and fetched her some, even though it wasn't on the day's ice cream rotation. Emily had been so happy about the treat that Celeste took it upon herself to repeat the experience the following day.
Viking Polaris is not a big ship but it has so much to offer, with choices at every turn. This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. If you are old enough to recall the nightly newscaster Gabriel Heatter, he began his nightly news broadcast with “Good evening everyone, there’s good news tonight.” Indeed, there is great news for those cruisers... Antarctica is the adventure of a lifetime, something not undertaken lightly and a privilege that comes with responsibility to travel with respect and be rewarded by grace. One of the best things about small-ship cruising is the fascinating people you meet.
The biggest social event on a Viking Polaris Antarctica cruise is not necessarily the first glimpse of the continent's towering icebergs and snow-covered mountains. Viking is also unique in that its ship carries two special operations boats. These speed boats were designed with accessibility in mind — they can be boarded more easily than Zodiacs and have comfortable, individual bucket seats with armrests and hand grips. On the second outing, my group paddled all the way around a small island in Mikkelsen Harbor, where we admired a seal preening on the rocks and penguins soaring in and out of the waves (a swimming style called porpoising).
